This article introduces the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as a potential funding source for social work doctoral students. HUD's two doctoral research grant programs (i.e., the Early Doctoral Students Research Grant and the Doctoral Dissertation Research Grant) are nontraditional, largely untapped funding sources for social work doctoral students. The author provides an overview of both programs, describes the application requirements, the selection criteria, and the review process. Based on her experience as a social work student awarded both an Early Doctoral Students Research Grant and a Doctoral Dissertation Research Grant, the author provides tips, advice, and examples for preparing a strong application.

Abstract  This study examines the unique experiences of low‐income rural participants in an asset building program‐the Individual Development Account. Using data from the American Dream Demonstration, this study addresses three main questions: (1) What are the individual characteristics associated with saving outcomes among rural IDA participants? (2) What are the program characteristics associated with savings among rural participants? (3) What are the policy implications for supporting asset building in rural areas? To answer these questions we conduct an Ordinary Least Squares regression analysis. The results suggest that low‐income rural participants have the ability and willingness to save toward the accumulation of assets in IDAs. Looking at individual characteristics, home ownership appears to be an important predictor of savings. In addition, this study suggests that program characteristics (financial education, peer group meetings, match rate, direct deposit, and monthly saving target), not merely individual characteristics, are important in explaining saving performance for this group.

The distinction between political left and right has been blurred through the years in western countries and probably more so in Israel. Using a national random sample of high school students, this study is an investigation of which political attitudes distinguished between right and left in Israel. In addition, the influence of religiosity and socioeconomic status on political identification was explored. The findings show that right and left attitudes are demonstrated in diametrically opposite ways with reference the extent of land compromises that should be made with the Arab countries. The more positively one scores on religiosity scale the stronger the identification with the right. On the other hand, despite the leftis claim of being pro labor and the Champion of the working classes, it appears that the lower the socio-economic Status the stronger the identification with the right rather than, as might have been expected, the left. The implication of the findings are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.) ; Der Unterschied zwischen politisch linken und politisch rechten Orientierungen ist in den meisten westlichen Ländern, besonders in Israel, in den letzten Jahren unklar geworden. In dieser Studie werden auf der Basis einer Zufallstichprobe von Schülerinnen und Schülern der Oberstufe politische Einstellungsunterschiede herausgearbeitet. Zusätzlich wird der Einfluss religiöser Orientierungen und der sozioökonomische Status auf die politische Orientierung in Israel untersucht. Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Unterschiede zwischen linken und rechten Einstellungen vor allem Blick auf territoriale Kompromisse gegenüber den arabischen Ländern bestehen. Auch Religiosität hat einen starken Einfluss, indem sie direkt mit der politischen Rechtsorientierung zusammenhängt. Je niedriger der sozioökonomische Status, desto stärker ist die Identifizierung mit der politischen Rechten. Diese Tendenz ist auffällig, weil die politische Linke sich intensiv um die Zustimmung von sozial benachteiligten Gruppen bemüht. AbstractLow-income households struggle to accumulate emergency savings, which increases economic vulnerability in the face of unexpected events like expensive car repairs. This vulnerability may be even greater among persistently low-income households, which might benefit most from building emergency savings using tax refunds. This study examined the effects of randomly assigned behavioral interventions that incorporated a choice architecture manipulation and savings-related messages aimed at encouraging refund saving and delivered through a free, online tax-filing software program. The study sample comprised 4,536 tax filers, including 1,235 with persistent low incomes. Using administrative tax data and data from a two-wave household financial survey, regression-adjusted treatment impacts were estimated using intent-to-treat analysis to examine whether filers had any of their tax refunds still in savings and how much of their refund they still had saved six months after filing their taxes. Results indicated directional but nonstatistically significant increases in these savings outcomes across three treatment groups for the full sample, yet statistically significant treatment effects among the persistently low-income subsample, effects that were moderated by the prefiling absence of emergency resources. These results suggested that tax-time savings interventions are most effective among low-income households with the greatest needs for emergency savings.

Despite the array of public programs offered to help households mitigate the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, many still needed to rely on savings, credit, or other assets to make ends meet. This reality may exacerbate existing social and economic inequities because racial and ethnic minorities often have lower access to assets and credit than white households. We use longitudinal national survey data to explore the extent to which different racial and ethnic groups experienced housing hardships during the pandemic, the role of liquid assets in mediating housing hardship, and whether job/income loss moderated the relationship among race/ethnicity, liquid assets, and housing hardship. We find that liquid assets significantly mediated the relationship between race/ethnicity and housing hardships and that the effect was stronger for those who lost jobs or incomes as a result of COVID-19.
